Thought of the Day: “Post Apocalyptic Readiness” or “Where Would You Hide?”
Part of the reason I love post-apocalyptic fiction is because I find it fascinating to get the various takes on how civilization would go on if there was nuclear war, a zombie plague, a natural plague, or a synthetic virus that threatened to wipe out earth’s population. I don’t think I have ever seen a post-apocalyptic event play out where the protagonist was completely prepared for the end of the world. Mostly they are just shocked and trying to survive, or they wake up in a world gone to hell (28 Days Later, The Walking Dead comic).
So here is a thought, if such a catastrophic event were to take place today, what would you do? Where would you go? Who would you save? How would you survive?

My first instinct would be to get to a prison as it would offer:
1. Security- fences, usually with electronic warnings and powered by generators in the event of a power outage.
2. Guns- nuff said. Without guns yer fucked in the zombie apocalypse. So long England!
3. Kitchens- you can use the stoves, etc, and the stock of food there.
4. Vehicles- always vans, etc about for prisoner transport.
5. Medication- usually a hospital ward present.
The problem, of course, would be the inmate population which would already be there and not likely wanting to be helpful π That or the guards would have already taken it and again, may not want a bunch of people there to feed/care for.
Realistically you’d likely be better off away from major centres of civilization as that is where the majority of the zombies would be and I think we all know how other survivors would behave….
I see you have thought this through well! References to The Walking Dead aside, a prison would also have, you know, prisoners!?
probably the first thing i’d think about is food and weapons; I don’t know of too many places in Toronto that sells guns.. maybe one of those Pro Bass Shops π
Most outdoor sports shops carry shotguns and crossbows at the very least or maybe that’s just in hickville (Saskatchewan).
Think about it, will most people not have thought of the same thing? What are the chances of you getting there and finding it picked clean?
I suspect I will be part of the huge anonymous mass that already turned into a zombie. Ignorance is definitely bliss here.
Realistic, albeit bleak!
Underground shooting range near my home. The only entrance to the range proper is down a narrow alley, across the open parking area, through an upper structure and courtyard, into a building and then through that to the (heavily gated) stairway. The range itself draws air from massive air conditioners, and can be completely sealed if necessary.
Apart from the fact that there are guns and ammo to spare (and equipment for making more if you somehow run out, plus CNC mills for parts, albeit that those are in the upper buildings), the place is also near a few shops for food supplies and is literally made of chokepoints, barricade points, killzones and fallback positions. Plus there’s the courtyard area where you could spend a bit of time outside so as not to go stir-crazy.
Oh, and there’s a petrol station across the road from the alleyway, because KILL IT WITH FIRE. Or, you know, you could fuel up and head for the wild. South africa’s got some nice big veldts and even deserts.
